    Gmail App Not Notifying?

My e-mails are not notifying me in the status bar. I checked the settings and it is set to notify and vibrate when an e-mail arrives, but it does nothing.

I have to click refresh on the g-mail app itself to show in the inbox.

    Can someone help with this?

Thanks. I enabled it through Gmail Web, and then followed the instructions to configure e-mail on my phone. I tested by sending an e-mail from my hotmail account, and the message does not show. Should mail not come instantly?

Mail coming instantly? eh, -- sometimes, depends on your connection and the web itself.

should come in less than 2 minutes at least... but yeah it depends on the connection of your nexus.

was IMAP not enabled from the start? should work after enabling it.

    Lightbulb Worked for me

Hi! Double check that auto sync is enabled. (And background sync if not already) I had the same symptoms and re-enabling auto-sync fixed it. I think it may have been the recent update of last.fm that switched it off. I say that because I just saw last.fm listed in the accounts menu for the first time after recently updating it. Hope this helps!

Yeah, IMAP was not enabled, but I enabled it through Google Web so notifications still took forever, but see my other reply below.

I was sending test e-mails and notifications were coming in 14 minutes, 14 minutes, and 21 minutes after I sent them, then I clicked AutoSync through Settings-->Accounts & Sync on my phone and they came literally a minute later.

What I don't understand is what auto-sync did to make them come that much faster. I don't get the purpose of Auto-sync. I read the manual, but it still doesn't make sense to me. Can someone explain?

I believe the difference is standard polling (7 minute increments..interesting!) versus 'long-polling' (auto-sync is similar 'push', mimicing bi-directional comm.). In long polling, a data request is sent to the server, and if the server has no new data, it keeps the poll request live, and feeds it when new data exists. Still, long-polling also needs to be refreshed at some interval..and usually it's client-side.
