Google voice -- best way to setup call forwarding?

    Hi all,

Planning to get an (unlocked) Nexus one and a new Tmobile. I am not particularly attached to my existing (AT&T wireless) phone number.... Its OK if I have to switch to a new number.

Now... to the Google Voice question...

As I understand it, there are two ways to set up Google Voice:

    1. Forward your cell phone to Google Voice.
In this method, you give your (Tmobile) number to everyone who wants to call you.
Use Google Voice app on Nexus One to check voice mail.

    or
    2. Forward your Google Voice to your cell phone.
In this method you publicize your Google Voice number.
(BTW, when you make a phone call, do you use Google Voice to make the call? Otherwise, how to you prevent people from seeing t

Question: I see some pros and some cons with either approach. I would like to hear from people and see what they think is the more useful setup.

Please share your setup on this thread!

Thanks in advance for your comments/feedback!

I use method #2. Works fine. Calling on GV does not use cell minutes so you can probably buy a lower minutes package.

As far as I know, if you use method #2 to call your barber, for instance:

    1) Google Voice calls you back on your cell phone, then
    2) GV calls your barber (using your GV number) and then connects the two of you

Therefore, a GV call is free only if incoming cell phone calls are free. This is the case in most countries, but generally not in the USA.

In Tmobile, you have the notion of "My Faves" . If you can get the GV number as one of your "Faves" then the call will actually really be free. For example, visit:
Free Google Voice calls with T-Mobile myFaves : Devin Reams

I have a follow-up question. When using Google Voice with method #2, are there any disadvantages?

I believe Myfaves is being faved out in favor of unlimited calling. At least, it wasn't offered when I tried T-Mobile in January.

I dunno about advantages to using GV to call out from your mobile. If you intend to make your GV number your number-for-life, it may be less confusing to your correspondents. Also, it's possible that international calls would be cheaper.

The big advantage that I see is the SMS through GV is Free.

Friend sends SMS to your GV number. GV notifies you over Data connection (which is "free" since you are already paying for it).

Otherwise, for SMS you will either pay per SMS or have to pay an extra monthly charge for "unlimited text" or something.

There are some other advantages of GV as well, if you are travelling etc and may have a need to transparently forward your calls to other phones etc.

I do this. I like having the option of using call screening and call presentation on incoming calls (though I don't always use it). I like the Nexus One feature of prompting to make a call through GV or through T-Mobile each time I click a contact to dial (though you can disable this to a default action).

I also make lots of international calls, which using my GV number obviously helps with.

In general, the great integration between the N1 and GV is one of my favorite features.

I use method 2 with AT&T A-list. Essentially unlimited incoming and outgoing minutes through GV plus rollover minutes from AT&T.

    Hi @FutureofPhones, @metalman, @dixy2k and others:

Is there any disadvantage to using method #2?

If you use your GV as the primary number, is there any disadvantage?
I can't think of any, but I would like to be sure...
