If you haven't found it yet you can try looking at these custom roms.

It all depends on which style of rom you want. If you want a sense ui style rom go for MicroMod Desire SuperHybrid, or try out eViLs NXSense. I would personally stay away from eVils NXSense HD or eVils NXSense myTouch4G as these roms still have some bugs. If you want to try MicroMods Desire SuperHybrid make sure that you have an updated radio for the rom to work properly.
If you want a Froyo style rom then try out Cyanogen, Enomther's, the Kang-o-rama, the FRF91/Froyo FRG83, or MicroMods Froyo FRG83 roms.
If you want a whole new experience try out the MIUI style roms. Rods MIUImod, is a customized version of the stock MIUI rom but has its limitations (theming does not work from what I hear). The stock MIUI rom is a very good rom to try out. I currently use this rom and its really good.
I have tried most of these roms and each has its own pro's and con's but you will have your own style. My one advise to you is to ensure that you do a nandroid backup each and every time you flash a new rom. Also make sure that you read the OP (opening post) to each of the roms you try. Most times the Dev will have instructions on how to install the new rom.
Once you get comfortable flashing roms you will most likely try them all out. Have fun with them and good luck.
