I'm on the west coast, so it's 10pm...
Call it a night, and we'll pick up later...

Setting up the sdk is the hardest thing about rooting IMO

In the mean time, in the sdk folder you have in windows, you'll have a "platform-tools" sub-folder. Copy the contents to the "tools" sub-folder... ADB and other tools are in the platform-tools, and I find it easier if they are all in the same sub-folder...

Well according to the guide on rooting and flashing cyanogen mod this is where you type "fastboot-windows oem unlock" which unlocks the bootloader.

    No.
Fastboot is the "utility", and you add extra commands to make it do what you want.
If you type in "fastboot" it will return a list of available options, one of them being "devices".

"fastboot devices" should return your phones ID number, so you know it's connected...

I'm going nowhere, if you wanna carry on?

If you copy the contents of the platform tools to the tools folder, you'll notice the dll file that was listed in the error message as missing, is one of the files you are copying...

"fastboot devices" confirms that your PC can see your phone (device)
Until your PC can see it, "fastboot oem unlock" won't work...

Google updated the sdk earlier this month (for Gingerbread), so the set up is different...

No I could go on doing this until tomorrow morning it's just most people don't want to do that especially on the 24 of December (well here it is) so I wanted to know if you were going getting tired is all.

So then I copy that file from the platform tools to the tools folder you think it will work that is what you are saying?

Should work once the files are copied...
If not, switch your phone from FASTBOOT to HBOOT, then select the RECOVERY option, and it might force install of the new dll's...

If it forces the install, switch back to FASTBOOT, if not, reboot your PC, and try again...

Well instead of coping over the whole content of the platform tools I just changed over the AdbWinApi.dll file and now when I do "fastboot devices" there is no error message but there is nothing that happens. Maybe if I change all the files over?

    Try copying all the files...
It may also be because the drivers didn't install properly.
My PC had to reboot before the drivers were recognized fully...
