I do have rom manager, but on step 13 it says that i must pull the battery out after the second solid nexus.

Then on step 14 it says that i must boot into recovery. How can I boot into recovery? I know that holding the (vol -) and place the battery back in has the same effect but I cannot select the recovery option because my power button does not work. If I turn the phone back on after step 13 I lose my root and su access. How can i boot into recovery if my phone is already off and my power button does not work?

After step 12, is the phone actually rebooting?
Typically, if you install an update as "install zip from sd", the phone doesn't reboot. It only reboots if you "apply sdcard: update.zip"

Does the file: b90257ed8cd3.signed-passion-ota-121341.b90257ed.zip have to be renamed to update.zip?

If so, I think that is the problem as the guide doesnt state to rename it.

No - you don't need to rename it if you use the "install zip from sd" option...

Did the phone reboot when you did this?

Yes, the phone did reboot when i selected "install zip from sd card"

After I selected "install zip from sd card" , another window opens and it has another list of options that says apply update.zip and choose zip from sd card.

Everytime I do not pull the battery after the second solid nexus logo, it boots and when it boots, I again have 2.3.4 installed and su is not there and i have lost root...

OK, leave it with me. I'll build you a 2.3.4 ROM with the su pre-installed.
May take a while, because I'll have to test it...

Wow please there is no need to put you on such a burden. It's okay really I'll just have to stick with my problem.

What is your end goal - do you just want 2.3.4 rooted, or do you want a custom ROM like CM7?

I'm trying to install a custom ROM -- specifically CM7. I just need a trackball wake since my power button is not functioning.

Lol - OK, you don't need to do step 12.
Instead of step 12, you should wipe, install CM7, install gapps and reboot - done...
