Apps?! Uh oh. Anybody else that is not rooted have this problem? I don't want to root either. If I do this, do I basically just follow the same procedure as the OTA update that I did manually?

Close, you have to name the file PASSIMG.IMG instead, and you don't need to go to recovery, it will give you the option to flash before that.

Messages still work, just the one you have will be lost.

As for apps, everything will be uninstalled, but apparently they come back after a reboot... wish I had known that at the time rather than racking my brain and reinstalling manually

Doesn't look like it at the moment.

I upgraded on the understanding that I could, only to discover that the info appeared to be wrong

Still, seems to work all right for me, so not the end of the world.

Anyone needing guide to manually installing a ROM, see my post here:

    http://www.nexusoneforum.net/forum/n...ta-update.html

I would advise everyone to make a back-up of your apps and settings before applying this ROM. Also, most people have found you need to rename the update ZIP to 'PASSIMG.zip', then it will become a lot easier for you. Some people have said you will loose all your apps, can't confirm myself as I wont be loading this until Google comment on it properly! Could be a test ROM for all we know!

Could someone help out a newb and tell me the best way to do this? I've got Astro File Manager. Do I just go into tools and use Application Manager/Backup. What about backing up my settings?
