3G on the N1 in Pacific SouthWest of British Columbia works great! I notice the only time it fluctuates slightly is when i'm in the suburbs, and i blame the cellphone company for that problem.

I had so many problems with signal strength when I was with T-Mobile on my N1! It switch to between 3G/EDGE all the time but mostly when I was inside buildings like houses, stores, work, and casinos. But I switched over to AT&T and here in Vegas I get 3G signal EVERYWHERE!!! My phone has not switch over to EDGE (except for one time when I was at Hoover Dam but thats what out in the middle of nowhere so I can understand that) since I got a 3G capable N1 for AT&T!

So I think it really comes down to which carrier you have and how strong their signal strength is in your area! For here in Vegas it's best to go with AT&T if you want full 3G BUT there is that 2GB internet usage limitation that you have to worry about which goes by so quick if you're like me and never puts the phone down lol

My N1 w/ AT&T occasionally fails to maintain 3G on areas with weak signal. But other phones such as Samsung Captivate or HTC Aria, iPhone 3gs still remain connected on 3G. I think the signal reception of N1 may be less powerful than that of other phones and honestly, it is quite annoying.

I was in a rural area of West Virginia this past weekend and had no data and I was roaming on at&t. My wife just got the samsung vibrant. She had edge and tmobile phone coverage. There IS a problem.

First off let me say I Love my nexus one. Far as the 3g problem, its a problem that has not been resolved although I'm running custom roms. A switch between that new desire HD with the new sense and cyanogen nightlies. I do see edge often when at home

*#*#4636#*#* switching to wcdma only seems to clear up all 3g issues. Never seeing Edge again unless you do a factory wipe.
