I got my N1 on the 7th of Jan and just popped in my sim card from my Nokia AT&T cell. Works just fine. I can access the internet whenever I find a wifi signal within range.
It should also work just fine on their EDGE network.
Don't I have to buy some data plan to access Edge?
Yes, but being off contract, you have some reasonably priced options.
No, it seems not. I am using AT&T pre-paid on my N1. I have no data plan, however, when I thought I was using WiFi, N1 connected to the internet with Edge. A good amount of time had elasped before i realized it. It was a costly session. $50 for 1 1/2 hour.
I looked at the AT&T site and I read that all of their voice services have access to Edge. But if you don't have a data service, the price of access to Edge is very steep. I think I saw .01 for a kb.
Two other members alerted me to apps which will keep Edge off when necessary. One is Quick Set Up and the other is APNdroid
