Near giving up. Computer continues to hang on "installing USB drivers". I'd be happy just being able to tether with the USB cable at this point since I really don't want to void my warranty by rooting the phone. Seems it shouldn't be this difficult. My Moto RAZR2 and Nokia E71 tether easily. I'm forced to bring one while traveling and swap SIM cards just for this task....PIA!

You mention you can use BlueTooth, and PDANet does have a BT capability. I never installed anything on my computer, just PDANet on my N1, and connect via BT. Very simple.

Maris....you were able to connect via BT without rooting? After numerous frustrating attempts to tether with PDANet, I finally got it to work via USB cable. It's not as convenient as BT, but it works. Not comfortable rooting just yet. Maybe when the "new" wears off.

No, you tether your phone to your laptop so you can use 3G, not wi-fi. Big help when you don't have wi-fi available.

Pretty obvious that, when wi-fi is available, that would be the way to connect. I should be equally obvious that wi-fi is not always available. In a pinch, getting online through a phone is a lifesaver.

No, you'd have to have a data plan available on the phone to use this. There are inevitably going to be some situations where the phones internet and data capabilities are going to be insufficient for your needs...a case where your laptop will be needed, and it will need to be connected. Tethering gives you that option, wherever you may be. If your phone can connect to the internet, so can your laptop.
