    Keyboard Won't Activate When Messaging

    N1, v 2.1 update 1

Most of the time when I try to message, the keyboard will not appear when I touch the "Type to Compose" box. This will happen whether I try to initiate the message from Contacts or Messaging or if I try to respond to a message that someone else sent to me. The function just seems to "hang," i.e., nothing happens. Sometimes after a minute or so, I'll get a keyboard - sometimes I never get a keyboard.

    Known issue? Suggestions? Thanks!

Just press down on the track ball. Highlight the box it should highlight orange and press down on the white ball. you should be good to go.

Mine would do this too. I figured out that you need to touch a specific part of the box in order to get the keyboard to come up. Specifically the left side of the compose box.

I actually started swiping my finger from left to right across the box. The keyboard comes up every time for me now.

Thanks to both of you - wxl14 - the trackball trick seems to work but I'm puzzled as to why it is necessary.

Pricej636 - I've touched left, right, in the middle, slid across, changed orientation and done it all again! Nothing...

After a month or so this is all that I have to complain about (but, to me it was getting to be a deal breaker; and, I'm not even a heavy texter!) so, I guess that's not bad and a WHOLE lot better than the socialist Jobs phone! And to the extent that this is a prevalent issue, I'm sure that it will be fixed.

Oh...the speaker could use a little work, I guess, but, it's sort of comforting to have Stephen Hawking in the co-pilot chair while "navigating!"

    Thanks.

Nexus One Type To Compose touchscreen fails

I have the same problem, when I touch, swipe, jab, pounce or dance on the "Type to compose" box at the bottom of the screen to reply to a text message; maybe 1 in 10 tries brings up the keyboard to type.

I used the idea from this post, tapping the trackball, thank-you.
But, this has to be a flaw, hardware or software.

Hope someone posts a solution, or HTC/Google makes good on a "new" replacement, not a refurb replacement.

I'm still on Version 2.1 update 1. Not sure if its a software bug that 2.2 corrected?

glbgroup - D*mn, I never thought to dance on the little @#$%^&!! So, I'm glad to hear that it didn't work!

Yep, if it hadn't been for the "blackberry method" (<-my name for the trackball workaround that wxl14 proposed) I'm afraid that the N1 and I would have parted company; and, as I mentioned, I don't even message very often.

Hardware/software, this is a serious issue that I hope will be solved by the Froyo update (<glad that I'm not the only one who hasn't been updated). But, perhaps, as Steve Jobs said about the anti-porn phone 4....maybe I'm just holding it wrong!!
