Install a custom recovery through fastboot, and then you can do whatever you want, including rooting your current setup (so you can backup all your data, etc).

Do you know how to use fastboot?

Take a look at the first post in this thread, and set up your pc. You can then confirm connection by typing "fastboot devices"...

Ok so I know this isn't the exact thread that I need to be posting in (because my phone is an Evo rather than a Nexus) but my issue is the exact same thing. Is it possible to follow the same steps (but a different file, one that's made for the Evo) and downgrade it to Froyo and have the HBoot showing as a version that's rootable? Again sorry for posting about my phone in the wrong thread, but its the same issue for myself.

I'm sure you have similar options, but I wouldn't recommend trying to follow anything for a different phone. These methods vary between different versions of the same phone, so to try on a different phone is risky, to say the least...

I would recommend asking in a forum specific to your device.

Ok thanks. I figured that that would be the case, but also figured it couldn't hurt to ask. Appreciate your quick reply though! Well off to the correct forum I suppose!

Oh no bud. Totally not your fault. I knew that I was posting in the wrong forum to begin with and was (i guess) hoping against hope that someone would know off hand? No fault of yours for sure.
