OK, I installed that recovery image.. I hold the volume-down button during boot and select 'recovery'. It hangs at the cross again. Any other suggestions?

I can't get to the SD card, I don't have another phone that uses micro SD or any kind of card reader. Are there any other options?

    Hmmmmm...
    That's looking like bad news.

Let me think on this for a while...

Ok, update. I unzipped the Passion-FRG33.zip image and flashed each section via fastboot (boot, system, userdata, radio). It came up. I'm not sure I trust it though... I think I'm going to flash the custom recovery and then do a nandroid backup.

Frustration and lack of smart phone can make a person learn alot. I'm terrified to upgrade to Gingerbread again. I did it manually last time and didn't wait for the OTA.. could that be the problem?

Well it's possible that the upgrade corrupted something, but you've earned your wings in fixing it! If things go pear shaped again, you now know how to deal with it!! xD

If you do plan on upgrading again, I would recommend using a pre-rooted ROM. You seem pretty comfortable handling the phone, so you may as well get the most out of it...?

Awhile back I played with custom roms, but everytime an OTA update came through, I had to jump through all kinds of hoops and lose all my apps, etc. What, in particular makes it worth the custom roms and root? I'm downloading the OTA Gingerbread, and I notice it's now 2.3.3.. so maybe they patched some things.

Custom ROM is a personal choice, but there are other advantages to having root. For me, the ability to backup and restore everything is huge! I also like the a2ext way of placing apps and data on the SD, so you can get more space, etc...
