Unhappy Rooted phone OS Update Failure

I bought a used Nexus One on eBay.
It is Rooted and runs very good.
I know nothing about a Rooted phone but understood that I would have to install updates myself.
The apps I have installed update automatically.
    The OS will not.
It has Android version 2.2 installed.
Now and then the phone does try and automatically up date itself to a new OS but always fails.

During the auto OS update I get the following screen messages:

    Build: RA-Nexus-V1.7.0
    Finding update package...
    Opening update package...
    Verifying update package...
    E: No signature (8 files)
    E: Verification failed
    Installation aborted

I've gone to several Nexus One on-line forms and learned how to manually up date to the latest Android OS version.

Trying several times (each time downloading a fresh install file) I always get the same results - Installation aborted.

Here's the screen messages I get while trying to do a manual update.

    Install: Update.zip?
    Install from SD card...
    Finding update package...
    Opening update package...
    Verifying update package...
    E: No signature (226 files)
    E: Verification failed
    Installation aborted

    Can anyone me on this??

Install cyanogenmod and never look back....

CM 7.1 RC1 is a great choice. It's 2.3.4 based with lots of nice extras. You won't be disappointed.

I'm just an ordinary (very basic) user and want a KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) phone.
I would prefer to have my Nexus One phone put back to it's un-rooted state if that's possible with the latest Android OS installed.

CM 7 (or CM 7.1 RC1) is no more complex than the stock release. But it does have some very nice features that you might enjoy. I'd highly recommend giving it a look.

If you want stock, then I can respect that. What I would suggest through is installing the stock rom yourself. You probably don't know what rom is on the phone right now, because some don't do a good job of identifying what they actually are (even CM nightlies don't tell you which nightly you have). Since you don't know what rom you have, you also don't know if the update you are flashing is compatible with your rom. You may be able to force the update by turning signature verification off in recovery, but that still may not work.

My suggestion is to install a rom yourself - be careful though, because you may lose root if you do things in the wrong order. If you don't care, then it's even easier..

An easy way would be the passimg method.

    https://dl.dropbox.com/0/view/e06bnq...ms/passimg.zip

This will bring you back to froyo 2.2 and you can update from there.
Download this file and place it on the root of your SD card(not in any folders)
    Power off phone

    Hold volume down & power

A screen with 3 androids opens
Wait for your SD card to mount,
It will check the passimg file then prompt you to update.
Using the volume up and down,(power to select) buttons select install update,
When its down select reboot and there you go you'll be on 2.2 and your update to 2.3.4 will come automatically.

    How do I try this??
I held down the Power and volume buttons and got the white screen with the 3 androids on skateboards. I then selected "RECOVERY"I then get a black screen with a single android on a skateboard an arrow that circles the android all on a black screen.
On this screen I get the following options:
    - Reboot system now
    - USB-MS toggle
    - Backup/restore
    - Flash zip from sdcard
    - Wipe
    - Partition sdcard
    - Other
    - Power off

Flash zip from sdcard is what I chose.
    The next screen says:
    "Choose update ZIP file.
    My only option is: "Update.zip"
When I select this file I get the message "Install : Update.zip ?
When I confirm, this is when I get the "E: No signature (226 files)" error.
I see no where I can turn the signature verification off in recovery.

Am I missing a step somewhere??

    Thanks.
