New Issue; Unable to initialize wifi

So, I unboxed my brand new N1 today. Went through the set up steps and chose to set up everything later. I then tried to set up wifi. I clicked the box and it said it was turning wifi on. After the box shows the green check mark, the phone says it "can't search for wireless networks" then cuts wifi off.

When I try to add a wireless network manually, it says "can't save wireless network." Then cuts wifi off.

And on both, I get an error message: "Sorry! Application settings (in process com.android.settings) is not responding." I choose force close, and it shuts down wifi. I choose wait, and it shuts down wifi.

I've tried resetting the phone to factory default both in the normal Android GUI as well as doing the hard reset and still no luck.

    Any ideas?

I think you are both missing the point.

When I go to the wireless settings (either through the menus or on the page 3 home screen) and tap the gray box, it will turn on the wifi (so it says) but is unable to see any of the four SSID's broadcasted. Also, without me doing anything but tapping the button, I get those two error messages (Can't scan for networks and the process problem) then the wifi automatically cuts off. This whole cycle takes about a minute to play out.

I also went through the power settings and ensured the wifi is always on, however, it still cuts off automatically.

I researched through google and have seen a small sampling of G1's had the same issue - some were fixed by reflashing the OS, while the rest just returned/replaced the phone.

I was hoping to avoid having to go through the headache of getting a replacement.

Then I think it would be worth your time to call HTC Customer Service for help on this one. HTC - Nexus One Support and Repair or 888-216-4736.

Let us know what they have to say.

I'll just go ahead and call - because there are no 3rd party apps on the phone. This issue arose brand new, straight out of the box.

Thank you for the contact information for HTC!

HTC advised to do a factory reset.

Once shown that the reset was unsuccessful, they opted to exchange phones.

Hopefully I'm not unlucky enough to get a refurbished phone in less pristine condition than my brand new phone like I've heard reports of.....
