HSPA is an improvement to existing 3g. Tmobile is suppose to be pusing HSPA+ with existing 3g bandwidth to reach download speeds of 7.2 mbps. It doesn't have anything to do with the frequency of the 3g that it is on, and 900/AWS (1700)/2100 refers to the frequency the radio received the 3g, and that frequency is compatible to the T-mobile Variety in the U.S.

HSPA+ is 21Mbps, HSPA is 7.2 Mbps on T-Mobile. These are theoretical speeds, and actual speeds will be slower, but still 3G fast.

T-Mobile does use HSPA, and is upgrading to HSPA+. The Nexus one is compatible with HSPA.
