Google Maps May Have Pre Loaded Map Options Available

Wow now this is even more excitement for me appreciating the N1 and it's capabilities of Stand Alone GPS capabilities.

Are there any plans to make Android Google Maps/Navigation available offline, when internet connection is not available? - Google Mobile Help

I came across this Google Thread searching about pre loaded maps. Although there's not yes or no answer, there's a grey area of maybe floating around on this thread that personally I'm excited about.

It will be very helpful to people in rural areas and limited connections.

I hope this develops into something promising.

Wow that is good news. I wish they would just announce things in advance! It would make everyone's life easier. I'm sure there is a solid reason for it

Note that the Google employee's response dealt with Google Navigation, and not (necessarily) Google Maps.

I'm sorry, I guess I should had clarified that. But I would imagine that if you have the maps for navi that you would be able to with Gmaps. I don't see why not. I think the main focus was on the Navi system in that thread.

My bad, I kinda just threw it all in the same pot.

Not "bad", just wishful thinking. I'd love to see a cached Google Maps when driving/walking through those parts of the USA with 0 bars of civilization. Or worse, 0 bars of bars!

My guess is they aren't really related. Google Navigation already caches data (as does Google Maps). My guess is the Google employee is saying they are going to improve the caching of Google Navigation. AFAIK, it currently caches the entire trip. The problem is if you go off course, it needs network data. Perhaps in the future they will change Google Navigation to do even more caching than the projected trip so going off course can still work in some situations.
