Nobody has ever bricked a phone by rooting

Disclaimer: The only way you could potentially brick your phone is when you flash the radio either wrong, or pull the battery while flashing the radio... though the one person I read about who bricked his phone that way, received a replacement N1 from HTC without any hassle. Personally I don't want to risk it though, that is why I have not flashed my radio and probably never will.

Rooting your nexus is like buying a Mercedes Benz and giving it to AMG or Brabus to tweak it up. Not sure too many people would be opposed to that.

I'm a pretty techie person, but was still a bit hesitant to root. As long as you make a backup before making large changes, you'll be fine. I just updated my kernel and am OCed and UVed with more ram, a new theme, the Desire camera, and skinned Swype and it's running so smooth.
