Phone got VERY hot with car charger & GPS

I used my Nexus to find my doctors today, using the built in "Car Home" software, and it worked great. I had it plugged in to a USB car charger by Griffin, and the device staid it was charging while navigating, but the phone got very hot to the touch... is that normal?

Normal? My phone also gets very warm while charging and having the GPS turned on. It means the phone is using a lot of power which is somewhat expected when it is running the cell radio, getting data, using the GPS receiver, and charging the battery.

It also mirrors my experience of running Google Maps on my phone. The battery will drain in just a couple of hours or so due to all of the activity. A lot faster than with the phone sitting fairly idle.

I make sure that Wifi is off in the car dock. Also, don't set the screen to full brightness (though I'd love to sometimes). Otherwise, the charger can't even keep up while GPS and maps is active.

With wifi off can your car charger keep up?

Also, when using the Nexus One in your car, try to keep it out of the direct sun light - that adds to the heat factor too.

I think so, as long as the screen is not at full brightness.

I'll be keeping an eye on this. I've only had it about a month.

Mine definitely did not keep up, I had less power at end of drive, I will have to try adjusting brightness down, and turning off wifi and see how it goes.

Yeah its normal but get the battery indicator app for your N1. It lets you know the battery temp if it gets too hot. Personally I don't let min get above 100* F.

Which one do you use? I grabbed BatteryTime Lite which does not do what I hoped (put a % indicator in the notification area).
