Keeping WIFI on all the time

To keep wifi turned on at all times go into setting -> wifi and network -> wifi settings. Then press menu button and select Advanced. Under wifi sleep policy you can select at what times wifi goes to sleep.

Just noticed it today, so if it's not news to you guys, sorry

Awesome forum, btw, and I am excited to register. Love my new Nexus One.

I'm sure there are plenty of N1 users that will find this helpful. Setting the WiFi sleep policy to 'never' also helps increase battery life.

Welcome, BTW, and congrats on your new N1.

How so? Having the the Wifi on ALL of the time should use more battery.

By not constantly switching back to 3G/Edge.

Note: this only applies when you're connected to WiFi.

That link was to a post written by someone that does not know what they are talking about. Be careful, the Internet is a very dangerous place.

3G/EDGE stays on whether it's used for Internet or not. Switching the Internet connection between cellular and Wifi is not a power heavy procedure. Powering down the Wifi definitely saves power.

I keep my wifi on all day every day! Unless I know I'm going to be away from wifi for more than a couple hours then I might turn it off. But I still have a good 30-40% worth of battery life left at night before I go to bed.

Your Wifi still sleeps when you turn the phone display off (via the power switch), unless you've changed that yourself.

We are talking about sleep, not turning Wifi on or off.

One of the first things I did was change the WiFi to never sleep, that way when I'm at home and not in 3G land I'll get updates and emails to my phone faster.

So...back to my original point.... there is no way that this (Wifi never sleeps) can use less battery power.
