That's what I did ('cept I used estrong file explorer instead). It seemed like it installed ok. But when I did the steps to use it, the keyboard looked exactly the same (to me) as the default keyboard.

So my question is - what's the difference between the default and HTC keyboard?

Are you sure you check in setting? like when you go to an entry box, and you press and hold, do you get the message "input method? and you are clicking on it, and seeing HTC IME?

Do this the easy way(right from your phone) First download Astro file manager from the Market. Then go to the above link for the Keyboard.

Click on the one that you want ( most N1 users should get the HD version, not Froyo, unless your phone has Froyo) Go to settings>applications, and check the box that says allow Unkown sources-

Open Astro, and find HTC IME, open it, then install it.

Go to settings, language/keyboard, check the HTC check box.

Go to anywhere where you can type, and press and hold on the entry box, then it'll say "input method, click on that and your done!
I used these exact directions and it worked perfectly, thanks!!!

I was missing the hold and choose "input method" step. Got it. It'll have to grow on me. It uses a lot of memory (I'm not rooted, and with it I only of 57MB left, it uses 5MB), and I was relatively happy with the default. But I'll try it for a while to see if I like it.

But thanks very much for the tip. I have been looking for an alternative, mostly so , and ? are on the front. , is, but I have to hold for ?. Would like to see it maybe as an added key next to "l".
