For the life of me I too can not put Froyo 2.2 on my phone. I've done everything to the letter, tried all methods (I think), and it won't show up.
And can you really get it straight from the phone itself? Is that possible?

You can download it from your phone.
Use the Phone to download the file.
Then use your file Manager (ex: Astro). The file will be under sdcard\download
    Rename it to update.zip
Then move the file to the sdcard root Directory ( /sdcard)

What folder do you have that file saved into?
Don't know what file manager app you're using, but in Astro file manager the top bar says "/sdcard".

Sorry. Don't worry about the word "root" If you have it in the download folder,
    -just long press the file
    -press edit
    -press move
    -then press the back button
-press edit on the top row
    -then press paste.
If you look on the very top, it should say something like /sdcard. Now the file is where it is supposed to be. Just make sure to rename it update.zip.

EDIT to make it easier to read.

    Sorry it didn't work.
But if you wanna try one last time from the begining:
    From your Phone
-copy this (edit: sorry can't find frf50 but if you have a link to it, copy it from your phone)
-open Astro and go to "download" folder
    -longpress and select "edit"
    -press "move"
    -press back botton
-press "edit" from the top menu bar
    -press "paste"
    -long press the file
    -press "edit", then press "rename"
-rename to update.zip then press ok

    Installation
    -power off phone
-hold "volume down" and turn on phone
-A screen should appear showing your phone’s system searching for various files. Scroll down to “recovery” using the volume down button and press the “Power” button
-When you see the triangle with an exclamation point symbol, press the “Power” and “Volume Up” buttons at the same time. This may take a few attempts
-From the menu that appears, use the trackball to select “Apply sdcard:update.zip.” Press down on the trackball to start.
-When the screen displays “Install from sdcard complete” use trackball to select “reboot system now” and wait for the phone to power back up.

The boot process takes about 1-3 minutes. Then you're done!
