Can someone please give a clear cut, layman distinction between

    1) Our N1 AMOLED Screens
    2) iPhone 4 "Retina" LCDs

PLEASE Dont confuse me with Samsung Galaxy S Super AMOLED

    Thanks

Generally speaking, LED screens have LED's that each emit a colored light.

LCD screens have a backlight and they actually block light to produce the desired color.

Active-matrix OLED (Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode or AMOLED) is a display technology for use in mobile devices and televisions. [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OLED"]OLED[/ame] describes a specific type of thin display technology which doesn't require a [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backlight"]backlight[/ame], and [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_matrix_addressing"]Active-Matrix[/ame] refers to the technology behind the addressing of pixels. AMOLED technology continues to make progress towards low-power and low-cost large size (e.g. 40-inch) for applications such as TV.[1]

LCs do not emit light directly.

In regards to the iPhone4 "Retina" display:

It's currently the highest pixel density (ie: Pixels per Inch, PPI) of any phone, but just barely.

You can see a list of the various pixel density displays here: [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_displays_by_pixel_density"]List of displays by pixel density - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

iPhone4 comes in at 326ppi, which is only 14 more than the old XPeria X1. For more comparison, my old HTC Diamond was 286ppi, and our Nexus displays are 252ppi. So while it's a huge improvement from the old iPhones/iPods (163ppi), it's not that much more than the other current smartphones.

Another factor is the screen size. If you have a larger screen, there will be lower pixel density (iPad screen, that people love to rave about is only 132ppi). The iPhone4 has a much smaller screen (3.5") than say, the DroidX (4.3").

Basically, the only way for Apple to increase the number of pixels in an iPhone (the old ones were starting to look really awful compared to newer phones), they had to double the number of pixels. The PPI before was 163, so they doubled it to 326, in order for older apps to scale properly. They apparently decided to capitalize on this by giving it a fancy name, and adding it to the marketing fluff.
    EDIT
: Sorry, had a couple numbers wrong. original iPhone is actually 163ppi, not 186)

So, is retina really that great? Compared to older iPhones, absolutely yes. Compared to newer Android phones (like ours), I would say you'd be hard pressed to see the difference unless you were looking at it greatly magnified.

I won't comment on AMOLED, as Beer Goggles did an excellent job of that

Thanks Gwhiz, but i wanted more than an opinion...
can we have any PROOF/ REVIEWS that state-

"We might not be Great (Super AMOLED) but we are Better than Retina Display

to rub into Crapple Fanboi's faces?

    :D

I just watched the Tech buffalo comparison on Youtube. The Iphone 4 is nice but, I'm still satisfied with the N1.

As far as the screens go, I do notice that some of the blacks in the N1 are blotchy, but that's the only drawback on the display.

One thing I've noticed about the iphone is that the keyboard has a better feel, I don't know what it is.

But really, the iphone for me is worthless. Everyone has it, it's nothing more than a status symbol. It reminds me of the Audi commercial with the Benz owners. hahah.
