    camera flash as flashlight. safe?

I found several apps that allows you to use your camera flash as a flashlight instead of your screen. Is this safe for the flash? It just seems like it's doing something it's not supposed to do.

The last thing I want to do is break my camera's flash...

That's probably one of the first apps I installed after I got Froyo. I got the Nexus One LED flashlight, it's free and all you do is add the widget and you can turn it on and off from the home page. There's others out there too that are free, some can do morse code and even strobe.

As for hurting the flash... well it's just an LED and I'm sure even if you left the flash on 24/7 it would still outlive the phone itself. So the only thing bad is... well your battery might drain a little bit when you use it. It's very handy! I use mine all the time.

I also use Nexus One LED flashlight, I really like it and don't think it will harm anything.

Like Snickolaz says, "It's just an LED".

It's not like a flash bulb or something.....

As far as battery drain goes, a single LED does not even use that much power. The funny thing is that the LED flashlight only works when the screen is ON. So there goes the power.

...although there are several warnings not to repeatedly flick it on and off

Ah good, point. That's what I was worried about. For some reason I imagined the flash as being an actual light bulb that can blow out at any time.

P.S. - I recommend the app SwitchPro. It's a great widget app with a flashlight LED widget included.
