I'm using the default Android keyboard for a text message.

I've just opened up gmail and the return key is there inplace of the smiley face symbol.

In email it's a "next Button"
I am not sure what messaging app you are using, but I am pretty sure it is in the settings of messaging app to either show smiley or enter key.
For instance, in Handcent you need to go Settinngs->application settings->Action key type (under keyboard setting). You have an option for enter or smiley there.

Well, I can't seem to find that option for stock messaging app. I thought I saw that option somewhere.

What version of Android are you running?

Oh... BlindType was acquired by Google earlier this month. Hopefully it will be released soon.
