I guess that I may have asked this before, but why don't you just jump on over to CM 7 (or 7.1 RC1)?

Both methods do the same thing, only with the "flash from SD" option you don't have to rename the file to update.zip
The update.zip method will also reboot your phone when it's done, which may not be desirable...
Ok if you use the update.zip option in recovery you need to have the file named update.zip although it can be any file, a complete ROM, an su image, a kernel, etc but you can also keep the name as is (or name it what ever you want) and just use the flash zip form sd card option. The update.zip thing is because in a stock recovery the only things you can flash are file named update.zip so they kept the option.
EDIT: danger you beat me to it.
Thats clear :-) tx to both

Alright, when I go into recovery I don't see the "install from sd" option. I only see the "install update.zip from sd" option. So I renamed the file update.zip and I got the "signature failed" message. I also tried this option with the original name of the file wich got me to the same point.![]()
If you are using Amon Ra, the option you want is:
Flash zip from SD card
Amon_RA Recovery Version 2.0 Released for the Google Nexus One | Android Me!
You may have to turn off signature verification in Amon Ra
If you are using Clockwork, the option you want is:
Install zip from SD card

With the Amon custom recovery, I am pretty sure that signature checks are automatically switched off... yes?
With ClockWork, don't you need to toggle the signature check on and off before you flash the update.zip?
Perhaps what danger-rat has pointed out is the issue. The correct option isn't being selected.

Close bourne - CWM signature verification is auto off, and you have to toggle Ra...
