Lightbulb FAO - UK based Nexus One Owners (prospective & current)

    Hello,

I received my N1 today in the UK, ordered on Tuesday 5th received Friday 8th.

I paid $578.64 for an unsubsidised and unlocked phone (including the A/C adaptor) at the point of Google Checkout, there were no other hidden taxes or fees with the delivery by DHL.

First impressions are it's sweet as, makes my iPhone feel very old in terms of speed, look, and feel. The whole thing seems a lot more sophisticated and grown up, although it doesn't 'hold your hand' as much as the iPhone in terms of immediate usability.

I have a GMail business and personal account, whichever account you use for your calendar is the one you want to sign in with first. You can add a second account but you won't be able to pick the calendar up from this (I made this mistake), this is just working with the native software...I don't know if there's a app that gets around this. (Unfortunately my contacts are in my personal account and calendar in my work account...need to get around this somehow).

I added my WiFi password on first start-up and it then automatically synced with my GMail account.

I put my O2 iPhone contract/pay monthly sim in the phone, the text and voice calls worked immediately, I had to add the voicemail number (901).

The following are the settings to get you 3G and MMS working. The idea being when you've entered these you'll have two entries in your APN menu called 'mobile web' and 'O2 MMS'.

    Press 'Menu'.
    Tap 'Settings'.
    Tap 'Wireless & Networks'.
    Tap 'Mobile networks'.
    Tap 'Access Point Names'.
    Press 'Menu'.
    Tap 'New APN'

Now key in the following settings:

    Name: mobile web
    APN: mobile.o2.co.uk
    Proxy: *LEAVE BLANK*
    Port: *LEAVE BLANK*
    Username: web
    Password: password
    Server: *LEAVE BLANK*
    MMSC: *LEAVE BLANK*
    MMS Proxy: *LEAVE BLANK*
    MMS Port: *LEAVE BLANK*
    MCC: 234
    MNC: 10
    APN Type: default

    Press 'Menu'
    Tap 'Save'

    Press 'Back'.
    Press 'Menu'.
    Tap 'New APN'

    Name: O2 MMS
    APN: wap.o2.co.uk
    Proxy: http://wap.o2.co.uk
    Port:9201
    Username: o2wap
    Password: password
    Server: http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
    MMSC: http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
    MMSproxy: 193.113.200.195
    MMS port: 8080
    MCC: 234
    MNC: 10
    APN type: mms

    Press 'Menu'
    Tap 'Save'

(These are courtesy from a post by Zenith on the O2 forum originally written for the HTC Hero, I've modified the Menu structure accordingly...O2 Forum :: View topic - No 3G support for HTC HERO??!!!)

That's as far as I've got and am pretty much up and fully running now, time to explore!

    HTH

P.s. I've not really sussed Visual Voicemail yet, how you get 'My phone number' to appear in the field on the Status page, or most importantly found a decent free porn site that works - let me know if you do.........;-/)

Interesting. My phone number appears in the 'My Phone Number' field, but I don't know how I did it!

Like you, I had to put all the details in manually (found them elsewhere, kudos to you for posting them here). I remember vaguely putting my number in somewhere. But where, I can't tell you...

It's read off the SIM (independently of the data the the provider uses). Some phones let you change it or you could put the SIM into a 3g dongle and issue a couple of AT commands.

It doesn't really affect anything though.. just display.

    @siimot...

    1. Do you have mms setup with your O2 contract - this was originally a problem for me on my iPhone?
    2. A restart never does any harm, are you pressing the active menu button and saving your settings properly?
    3. Triple check your mms APN entry for correct text entry.

Just tried to send an MMS and it's not working for me either. Definitely set up, as it worked on my iPhone.

I get a green dot next to the web APN, but nothing next to the mms one. I assume that's the same for those people it's working for?

Thanks for the reply, Yeah i used to get mms on my old xda phone

The phone will tell me i have an mms message when it comes to downloading it the error comes

I have the green dot also next to my gprs settings not mms

Bit of a random question how do i add contacts when writing a new sms, as typing the name doesnt seem to do anything so i have to goto the contacts page to compose messages

I just have a green dot next to my data APN (I think this denotes that it's the default).

What happens exactly when you try and send the MMS?
Did you have a regular pay monthly contract with O2 or was it sim only?

@siimot, if I understand you correctly you have the contact in your address book, but it's not picking it up when you type the name in when composing an MMS? This is probably beacuse in the contact record the number needs to be assigned as either mobile/home/etc...this field's probably blank at the moment, I found this on some of the contacts that GMail imported.
