I think the key is to charge it fully, not take it off the charger the first time before it is fully charged. As far as I know, playing with it in the meantime does not affect the battery whatsoever.

one mistake people make with the Li-ion battery is let it die completely before recharging... ive read in a few sites dealing with Li-ion batteries, that thats bad for them.

It is, but it'll take forever.

The good news is that the AC adaptor is auto switching, so although here in the UK we use 240v instead of 110v, the US adaptor works fine through a shaver plug. It should be the same for you too, where ever you are.

Supposedly with li-ion batteries it doesn't matter how you use them.

That said, I charged mine 100% before even putting in my SIM card because I had the patience. If I didn't have the patience, I wouldn't care.

I got mine at work, so just plugged it in (then played around) till I went home.

Well, not really. They have no 'memory effect' like what is associated with NiCad or NiMH cells, but LiI/poly cells are still temprature sensitive and longevity is increased with gradual, cool recharges as opposed to constant full discharge/recharge cycles. From a longevity standpoint, best to keep your cells regularly topped up, and I await the car dock in particular for that in my usage pattern.
So would it be better to USB charge the phone while at home/office since it's slower? I know the 12v charge off of a car charger is fast and hot and generally not good for any battery...

I too am planning to use both car and home docks. I am in the car a lot and use navigation a lot, will be very convenient to always have a charged phone. Battery has died prematurely on me twice now... Used to my Blackberry.
