Why I like the trackball on the N1

As a BES/Blackberry admin the trackball was the biggest failure point on the Blackberry not to mention they turned brown or even black after extended use. Since I have had my N1 for 3 days I hardly use it. I use it as a message indicator and it looks kinda cool. Its best use is for the picture gallery. When you want to show people your pics you wipe your screen and use the trackball to scroll through them that way you don't block the screen or grease it up swiping.

As someone coming from an iPhone (and who just got his Nexus One yesterday), I'm interested in how people use the trackball. I'm just not seeing a lot of use for it yet, but I'm sure there's a reason they have it there.

    I use the trackball CONSTANTLY.

I love the multiple colors and customization of the trackball lights. Perfect for when the Nexus is on a table and you don't feel like turning it on to see what messages you got.

I use the trackball to select fine links or select text for copy/paste in the browser.

I have the new trackball skip from Cyanogen 5.0.5, so whenever you push the trackball when the screen is off, it skips to the next song.

It also comes in handy for games that use trackball of course.

    That's if it's rooted, right?

Yeah, I should probably figure out how to copy/paste with the trackball one of these days.

For example. Lets say I wanted to copy some text from a site I visit a lot WWW.basketbawful.blogspot.com with the trackball. How would i go about doing that? Is the text on that site even editable on the N1?

I use it to work around some Android bugs. When I receive a text message, sometimes I cannot get the keyboard to launch no matter how many times I tap on the response field. So I trackball to the response field and click it with the track ball. LOL

Its a bit convoluted... But easy once you get the hang of it.

You LONGPRESS on the screen where the text is, then select SELECT TEXT.

Normally you can do the crude drag and select with your finger, but if you move around the trackball you get this little cursor that can move around.

Trackball to the text you want then CLICK ONCE, to start selecting, then roll the trackball to select as much text as you want. Click one more time, and the text you have selected will be copied to the clipboard.

Its kinda a lot of work, but selecting text with your finger is SO impossible.

Depends where you are selecting... But it shouldn't do this, unless the box you are clicking isn't coded to trigger the popup keyboard. In that case, if you PRESS AND HOLD the menu softkey, it will also bring up the keyboard wherever you are.

That's not working for me on a site like Mac Rumors: Apple Mac Rumors and News You Care About

If I just want to copy some text from a story on the front page a tap and hold doesn't do anything. Am I doing something completely wrong or is that text not selectable?

This makes complete sense if I could get the text selection thing to even pop up. That's a good advantage of the trackball.

donkeyman: It does this for me too in the messages app. Clicking on the textfield doesn't bring up the keyboard, but like NeonMonster said, I just long press the menu button.
