It means you can use Google Voice to make phone calls over your Data/WiFi service. VoIP means Voice over Internet Protocol. It's what Vonage, Time Warner, magic jack, and etc uses for phone call service.

SIP means Session Initiation Protocol which is the connection point to get you to the VoIP service.

Just like what happened to Skype, they might limit voice calling over wifi only but not in 3G

Are you talking about surfing the web and making phone calls at the same as in the phone call is made on a data VoIP? I, don't know? Good question, depends on what 2.3 is capable of doing with a VoIP call and using the internet

If you talking web and regular phone call, I would say no? I think that limited to TMo network functionality.

You can already do so by installing Skype. However, the version from Market only allows you to make calls while in WIFI only. You can google "hacked Skype" there is a version that by pass the restriction that you can make calls over 3G network. That will save your plan minutes.

The other way to save minutes is to sign up Tmo My-Fav. Then get a Google Voice phone number and add that number to one of the my-fav number. In that case, all your calls will be free when making calls using GV

Right now, on an N1, you can install a third-party app like Sipdroid and make Internet phone calls via any SIP provider, such as Gizmo5 on Google Voice. My interpretation is that in Gingerbread you won't need the third-party app.

I'd hate to see Sipdroid go - they've done an excellent job.
