Personally, I would nix the task manager apps and just use the system provided manage apps and kill off the annoying apps (Nexus Ones have Amazon MP3 for example).
To put it bluntly, you are wanting a rec on an app (that uses battery) to save battery life.

If you have Android 2.2 and above you really don't need a task manager. If you go to an empty spot on you launcher (desktop) and long press, select shortcuts, select settings, and select battery use. You should notice thar your screen is above 75 percent of the battery use. If you find an app that is (compered to the rest of the apps) excessive uninstall it or try to find a replacement.

That's why my phone is always set to 0%, I set it to 25% when need little more bright and it's VERY rare that I need to set it to more than 50%.

The small free Brightness level widget is a savior for me Mixed with WiFi OnOff, GPS OnOff and APN OnOff widgets (one touch disablers), I do have a pretty good battery life.

With Beautiful small clock and weather widget, these are the only widgets I use to then again, restrain battery use. And of course, no task manager.
