Is Technology Always Good For Us?

I have always been a technophile and gadget-lover. Look at this and you will know what I mean:
    http://www.box.net/shared/8b5yj8z4tv

I've been hearing more and more people debating whether or not the increasingly speedy and life-changing advances in communications technology are beneficial to society. I think this is a no brainer; of course it is good.

    Any thoughts?

Not always good. Redundancy, garbage in/garbage out, impersonal and distrustful, reliant on yet other technologies (power,backups,etc.)...list goes on.

The more we come to depend on our technology the more dumb we get.
    Spell check?
I got my daughter a basic calculator the other day ($1. My first did less for $72 1970s dollars) and it came with instructions with examples. Not of the %s, mem+, etc but the basic functions.
I asked an engineer at work what is 2+2. She reached for her calculator and when I kept it from her it took several seconds for her to be able to answer.

Dumber, and also more complacent with error. Without human emotion/intellect, there's no obligation for the technology to 'get it right'. It only understand outcomes of yes/no, zero and one. That often does not fit in human interactions.

Go to any message board on the web, and start reading the average posts. The art of the English language has been lost for the last three generations. People don't use punctuation, and many could not build a proper sentence if their lives depended on it. Spell check doesn't help when the average person can't tell if there, their, or they're are correct. Penmanship is a thing of the past, and I had to teach my 13 year old how to use a dictionary.
Technology is great, but today's society is dependant on it instead of using it as a convenience.

PS: Give the average person an atlas and ask them to plot a course from your home town to a random city. Sit back and watch the hilarity ensue!

LOL! Thankfully, MY penmanship is a thing of the past! But yeah..trying to get a kid to physically write something these days...forget it..that plays into my complacency angle. I won't be writing any anti-technology manifestos soon, but I completely understand their genesis. I enjoy technology that enhances my creativity and knowledge, as opposed to replacing it.
