connecting Samsung Xcover 5690 to Windows XP sp3

    Greetings,

Recently purchased a European model Samsung Xcover 5690 (ATT network) as backup for gps and communication on the water and in the backcountry. It logs on to the home wifi, calls ok and even works farily well with a very nice GPS app (Backcountry Navigator). But there is one little problem: linking to Windows XP sp3 on the desktop and the laptop.

Steps so far (using the Samsung USB cable):

    * downloaded and saved Googles config file Android Devices: Tethering and Portable Wi-Fi Hotspots - Google Mobile Help to a specific directory on laptop and desktop computers

    * followed Mr. Google's instructions directing the installation to go to the specific file holidng the software

    Results

    * the laptop seemed to go through the installation steps adequately (the config file appeared to do its thing) but no recognition of the phone in the computer's directory (though it was listed as a device elsewhere, see below)

    * the desktop had difficulty in installing the Google software (no msg re config files changing). I went to Windows help and support center, followed their steps (USB drives ok etc.) and still no recognition

    * when the Xcover is connected by USB to both computers (Xcover USB tethering checked "on"), the "E: drive" symbol disappears on the computers' directories. "E drive" reappears when tethering checked "off." Clicking on the "E:Drive" icon gives a message "Please insert a disk into Drive E."

    * the Xcover shows up as a Samsung device in each computer's hardware list as "working properly"

*booting the Xcover after connecting the USB cable, or rebooting with cable connected made no difference

Thus no connection for transferring data other than perhaps by email. Vexing. My old Nokia standard cell phone had no trouble connecting as a storage device.

Any thoughts or suggestions most welcome. Thanks in advance.
