ROM manager can't work on my phone

I have installed Rom manager on my HTC Hero GSM. When I try to backup my current Rom, my phone reboots to a white screen with the initials HTC and stays like that. The same thing happens when I command a "install Rom from SD" operation. Any one please help.

Can you reboot the phone and get back into Android, or are you stuck there? What version of Rom Manager and Busybox do you have? Also, which recovery version do you have? You should be able to see it near the bottom of the RM screen.

+1 I'm beginning to think that kousch may need to put a huge flashing pop up in the app telling people "Hey! FLASH THE RECOVERY FIRST!!!!" Or maybe have a button that says "Prep phone for ROMs << Use this prior to doing anything else!" where it checks for all that stuff. Because I know when I first used it I did the same thing not knowing otherwise.

Also Chrysolite, I don't see in any previous post where you downloaded and installed an actual ROM. So if you are trying to backup your current configuration in order to go back in case you have problem installing your first ROM, you need to do that from ClockworkMod Recovery, not ROM Manager.

    Follow these steps:
    1) use the top option in Rom Manager to "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery.
    2) use the second option in Rom Manager to Reboot into Recovery.
    3) once in recovery use the volume keys to scroll down to "backup", then from the second menu select backup again Wait while it does a full system backup. (If something in a ROM install later goes wrong, go back to here and simply choose "restore" to go back to this.
    3) Go back to ROM Manager and "Download ROM"
    4) Use Install ROM from SD Card (I'm assuming the Hero has one?)
    5) Once it runs everything (it should reboot and after some time you should see the screen say "complete" somewhere) you can go back into Rom Manager and THEN choose Backup Current ROM.

I wish I knew enough to do it. I'm only in Chapter 1 of a book trying to learn it, so maybe in about 20 yrs when the next thing comes out, I'll be ready in time to be obsolete.

All I wanna to is Xooma-Xoom-Xoom-Xoom > > > from my Xoom Xoom.
When rooting your device, preparation makes all the difference.
