How to Remove Update Request??

Somehow my HTC MyTouch 3G 32b received a download of 2.2.3 (NOT installed!). Now it periodically asks me to install the update. I am happy with 2.2.1 (rooted). How can I remove the download (if possible) and remove the request program? I'm baffled... Thanks! L
((Other questions: Can I prevent future unrequested downloads? Is 2.2.3 worthwhile? I've read conflicting reports. Would the install un-root the phone? How easy would it be to root 2.2.3? Again, I've read conflicting reports, some saying it's not possible to root it. Is 2.3 possible on this 32b phone? Worthwhile?))
