If your phone isn't the CDMA variant, then there is no official way to upgrade it beyond 2.2.1.

But you can install a custom ROM. For that, you will have to root your phone. This guide explain everything what you have to do, it even explains how to install a CyanogenMod 7 - the most famous Gingerbread custom ROM.

It will warn you what rooting your phone may do to your phone. However, you don't need to fear, because if you won't mess with system files and processes, nothing bad will happen. Rooting merely unlocks full access to your phone, if you are worried, just stay away from things you don't know. Like in Windows, don't delete the system folders and files. However, rooting will void your warranty if there's any left. But you can still unroot it and bring it back.
