    More on battery thrift

I've researched this for weeks and tried various apps and have not resolved the issue of being able to turn off 3G when I'm out of the area for days at a time without access, without turning off whatever other method AT&T uses to access data. I am told that the phone always searching for a 3G signal can really soak up battery. Wifi is not a problem, as I turn it off when I'm out of range of a wifi signal.

Maybe you have CDMA phone? To make sure, go to phone Settings ->
Wireless -> Mobile networks -> APNs and check whether your APN has
    'apndroid' suffix...

...Was the message I got from APNdroid app development and they never responded when I said "no", it's ATT WAP, wap.cingular listed under my APN Settings. Another dead end.

If I go into my Mobile Network settings and de-select Use Data Packets, will that turn off the 3G searching but leave data on? Seems I can still get text messages like that so that may be the answer, but I don't know if that actually stops the phone from searching for a 3G connection.

    Any advice?

If you haven't rooted yet do that. Then try using juice defender.
