1-Click Root for EPIC 4G
For those of you who have not heard yet, the guys at Unrevoked, have brought their famoud rooting method to the EPIC 4G! Make sure sure you read the entire post before venturing trying this, as there are some drivers and such that you will need to install for this to work.
I have used this method, and it woked flawlessly.
To be clear, all this does is root your phone. Once it is complete, you phone will look and act the same. It just gives you the freedom to start flashing ROMs, and to, well, do anything you want to your phone.
I will quit going on and on and just give you the link.
Root Samsung Epic 4G
Happy Rooting!
Thanks to the Unrevoked team for their hard work on this!!!

See the comments from that page. Everyone is having tons of errors and trouble. Do you know of a step by step, rooting-the-epic 4G-for-dummies guide that works flawlessly that we can all follow?

This is the one that I use (rooted 3 EPIC's so far):
One click root for the Epic 4G! v2.3.0 Now has superuser.apk! - xda-developers
The one thing that I keep seeing is that people are having issues with adb recognizing the device. I have experienced this myself once, and it ultimately turned out to be a voltage issue. If I tried using the onboard usb ports, it wouldn't work, but if I used a powered usb hub, adb recognized the device every time.
I hope this helps.

error: device not found
It does have something to do with underpowered ports. I have seen/had this problems with multiple devices. Do NOT use a USB Hub. The simplest way to resolve this is to just plug the device directly in to a port on the motherboard. I did this and everything went smoothly afterwards.
Good Luck,
