Need? No. Should have? Not unless you want one or do some dumb things with your smart phone.
If you want an antivirus program get one of the paid ones. I read a study that showed the free ones all don't catch half or more of the recent threats facing the Android platform.
To avoid viruses the best method is to only download from trusted sources, like the Market (and even then, read reviews!), the Amazon App Store, and similar. Downloading from the web or outright piracy is very risky!

I use avast free.... Its as good as the Web Version.
If you follow fbm and his guidelines you should not need an antivirus.
Get Lookout - its free and it also gives you the free facility to "find" your phone if lost or stolen.
Why get lookout? What is the benefit?

Benefits - free - easy to use - reputable - and it includes "find your phone" that is NOT done through Google- the less information we give to Google the better we will all be IMO.
Antivirus software is indispensable for your telephone. Norton 360 can prevent your telephone from malicious software.
