I'm running Gingerbread.XWKT5 (if that helps) on my - rooted - Ace. I would really like to get rid of the lock-screen as it does little that I value but I can't find anything in Settings that will do this. Other phones and a mod I had did this. Short of modding again with its will-it-break? doubts, is there any app/config change that will help, please?

This is usually an AOSP (android open source project) function. I'm not aware of an app that will completely disable the lock screen. Have you tried downloading some of the lockers from gplay and seeing if they offer this option? Other solutions would be to install any AOSP based ROM.... this is just to the best of my knowledge, hope someone comes in and helps you further.
