One way to find out is to go to Settings, then to About Device. There should be a Software Update option to check whether or not there is an update, but I'm not familiar with your device, so you may have a different setup. However, even if it says your device is up to date, you may still have an update available. The best way to find out is to hook it up to your computer and connect it to Samsung's Kies program.
Alternately, go here - https://www.google.com/#hl=en&sugexp...w=1280&bih=632 - there are several scenarios to choose from to update your Galaxy Ace (you didn't supply the model number, so I couldn't narrow it down more) inckuding a couple of YouTube videos.

thanks all, very helpfull. model number is GT-s5830i by the way.
What country and carrier? Different countries and carriers have different software versions due to carrier requirements.
Another option, is to install Samsung Kies and install it on your computer. That would also be able to give you the latest update. The link for Kies is the US site, so if you aren't in the US, you might have to search to find the proper version.
Welcome to the site. Hope you get this sorted out soon.
Is there a guide or tutorial available for downloading firmware to and updating it from a MicroSD card? Kies says that there is an update available for my Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830 which is on the Three UK network but I would like to perform the update from a memory card rather than via the USB port as I have been finding Kies unreliable even for backup operations and I don't want to risk it failing during the update.
From the SDcard, I don't know if you will find an official release that is able to be installed. Instead of using Kies, you could use Odin to flash an official stock firmware. I would recommend backing up your data if you choose to do so.
