One more question, am I right in assuming that all apps will be deleted and will require re-installation? And can this situation be salvaged by doing a back-up and restoring from there before a factory re-set? Thank you

When you set up after factory reset. All your apps will auto download from Google Play.

If you haven't yet, try to reinstall the ICS update. Then if that doesn't work, see if you can uninstall (or at least uninstall all updates to) the GMail app. Then update/install it again. If THAT doesn't help, you'll want to do a lot of data backup and go for the reset.

You download and install either ODIN or Kies, download the proper update version for your phone, and install it via ODIN/Kies. I recommend ODIN as it's a FAR superior program to Kies.

Thank you. Please bear with me. My update was done via wifi. I however have Kies installed on my computer. I attached my phone to my computer and asked for an update and it tells me all up to date. So how can I download the update again on to my phone?

Secondly I downloaded Odin as you said ver. 185 and installed it. Does it recognize the phone automatically or do I have to select it myself? How to proceed with the download and update?

I'm not too current on ODIN, but you may want to uninstall Kies (you can install it again later) to make sure there are no problems with it. I may be totally wrong here, so proceed carefully.

You'll need to download the update again, but a manual download link should be available in many places. Samsung or your carrier may have a direct download link on their website. Your phone will appear up-to-date in Kies because it technically is. This is why you're forcing the install via ODIN if you can.

I will attempt to assist, but I'm no Samsung expert -- yet. I'm planning on getting Galaxy Nexus soon, so I'm sure I will become intimately familiar with the programs in question in short order. :D

If not familiar with ODIN..dont flash it!!!

DO NOT INSTALL KIES..you need KIES as it drivers to recognise your Phone to use ODIN.

    Just do factory data reset.

Thank you for the heads up. I was not going to flash it when I read that furbearingmammal has not done it himself. Maybe I should hang on a bit longer to see what happens!
