Weird Phone Behaviour - Please HELP

Hi all, my Note is doing some weird sh*t!

Firstly, on the front screen it's saying it's charging when it's not even connected.

Second, I shut it down to try and fix it and it wouldn't re-boot. The green battery would show up on the screen but it wouldn't turn on at all.

I eventually got it started by hooking it up to my laptop.

But NOW it's saying that it's 'connected as a media device' when it's not connected.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In my ongoing search to find out WTF is going on I contacted the Samsung help centre who said that I might need to do a hard reset on my phone.

It as while I was trying to back up the damn phone prior to resetting it that I discovered the Kies and MTP USB driver issue.

What do those who know more than I (which is EVERYBODY!!) think about the hard reset? I've backed up the phone on Kies (on the one, single time I managed to get it to work) and I've saved everything onto the SD card using a couple of apps I found researching the issue on the web. So I'm DOUBLY backed up. (sounds so wrong!)

Any assistance or expertise would be greatly appreciated.

Thi time think with my laptop. For some reason the 'safely remove hardware' icon is not on the task bar (Windows 7).

I think my disconnecting it may be the cause of at least the USB symbol staying in the top left.

Any hints anyone?
