Question Using Android Phone as a GPRS Modem on Laptop

    Hi,

I just migrated to a Samsung Galaxy S Plus (GT i9001) .... android 2.3 based phone.

Previously, I had a Nokia Prism 7500, handset.
I used to connect it to my PC (Bluetooth / USB) and via Nokia Ovi Suite, sync.

Nokia Ovi suite - comes with an additional item - Connect to Internet
.... that way I could connect my laptop to the internet, using the Nokia handset as a GPRS modem.

How to do similarly (connect laptop to Internet), using Galaxy as a GPRS modem ?

    thank you.
    Jeevan

Is the phone rooted? If not, and you do not have a plan with your carrier to share the mobile data with another device, you cannot tether (which is what you are asking about doing) without running an app from the Market.

If you do not wish to root to tether I would suggest you look up and follow the instructions for PDANet or Easy Tether on the Market. If you do wish to root you can even use WiFi to tether if you so desire.

    Thank you furbearingmammal,

    For your response.

Sorry I am fresher to the Android world. So the below can be pretty silly.

    >> Is the phone rooted?
I am not sure. It is just one month old and I guess has 1 year manufacturer warranty valid, until Feb 2013.

    >> have a plan with your carrier to share the mobile data with another device
I have a GPRS plan with my carrier.
I can use the same SIM in my Nokia 7500 handset and connect it to my PC (USB or bluetooth)
and using the "Connect to Internet" option in Nokia OVI Suite, use the nokia handset as a modem on my laptop/ PC.

But Samsung Kies, 2.x has no such "Connect to Internet" option.
Does Samsung smart phones, have any other PC interfacing software (other than Kies), which would have a Internet connection manager?

    Your answer would be appreciated.

    thank you

Is it rooted? No. Do you want to root? No, not unless you want to invalidate your warranty.

Android is set up differently from Symbian in how it "tethers" other devices to the internet. However, that does not mean you cannot use it that way.

You will need to install an application (it is very lightweight) and drivers on your computer, but the instructions are available there. Now you will want to install the app on your phone and activate USB Debugging in the settings. You activate the app on your phone and your computer should immediately connect to the internet through your phone.

Let me know if you have any problems getting this to work. There are other apps that can do similar and we can try them.
