i personally dont know how they can tell but there are several ways to tether by usb. one of them is pdanet

Dorian can best answer this question. They can know whether you are or are not tethering. The specifics I am not an expert on.

The carriers can tell when you're tethering. However, if you keep your tethering to a minimum then AT&T might let it pass.
