Well, from what I've seen out of mine, hot is usually around 47-52c. Honestly though, it's so thin it's like the CPU is right on your hand... not much thermal insulation between the insides and your hand.

That said, I've seen much higher temps before, and around 50-52 is the high side of normal. Any hotter and it stops charging to cool down.

I've found out through my own stupidity that between 120-125f (~50c) is my Droid x max temp before cool down mode is enabled. I know most processors are ok up to ~160f before total meltdown. Its normal for most stock phones to run up to 110f

At the speed the CPU is being pushed at, yes. Especially with data streaming. It is a microwave oven, after all.

Microwaves broadcast in the 2.4GHz frequency band.

Software updates can help with the heat issue... kernel optimization helps a good bit, and a new kernel version is included in most updates. But I wouldn't expect it bring the temps down much, if you're keeping it at 1.2GHz or overclocking it.

    EDIT: Ninja post!

Some. The phone's always going to run a little hot, though.

They fixed a lot of the heat issues on the Droid 1 through upgraded software.
