Sony Commits More Fully to Mobile; Attempting to Purchase Ericsson's Mobile Division

Apparently, Sony is wanting to move beyond their partnership with Ericsson, and more fully commit to mobile phones. A new report indicates that Sony is in talks to purchase the mobile division of Ericsson outright. This would more than likely eliminate the Ericsson branding on their phones eventually, so we would simply see Sony Android phones.

According to analyst estimates, the Sony Ericsson division is worth between $1.3-$1.7 Billion, so Sony will have to fork over a hefty sum to have their own mobile phone company. All reports indicate that it looks like it might be a done deal pretty soon. Still, who knows what could happen in the mean time, or how long the negotiations will last. We will keep you apprised as we find out more details. Sound off in the forums if you think Sony has a shot of making an impact in the mobile phone world.

Saw this on engadget... Personally I like Ericsson, but if it means a vita phone then go for it!

    Good, yet Fearful

This sounds like a fantastic thing, but my fear is that the current Xperia Play will be replaced with something better and become completely unsupported shortly after this acquisition, and knowing Sony, there will be hardly any crossover value for the current Play...Hopefully, they will work on enhancing the current device or having some sort of trade-in-value swap for a new, more enhanced Play.

^ That is a good point. Hopefully they will continue to support PLAY. If they completely abandon it, I would be wary of future Sony devices!

I wouldn't say that. Remember the Xperia Play was a Sony Ericson device. Sony themselves is a much different company. If they abandon the Xperia for a better version of what is essentially a PSP/Vita phone then I'm all for it.
