i tried chompsms and gosms, since the epic messaging system isnt really user friendly.
But chomp shows my gmail groups but my contacts do not show up in the groups. . .go does not even show my groups
does it take time for the app to get this info after installing? or is there a better program?

Handcent is a very popular SMS replacement app. They list group messaging as an option, so it might work for you.
