Dell Streak to retail at $299 w/ contract, release date still unknown

Okay, we still don't have a launch date for the Dell Streak, as the Dell bigwigs scramble to finalize things on their own end. What we did find out today though, is that the Dell Streak will be retailing for $299 on-contract with AT&T, and $549 off-contract. That $299 price tag may seem a bit hefty, considering the iPhone 4, Galaxy S Series phones, and Motorola Droid X all launched under $200 (on contract). To justify the extra bucks, you are getting that huge 5" screen with the Streak. Also, as expected, the Streak is launching with Android 1.6 (sigh), but Dell promises a 2.2 upgrade sometime later this year.

A Dell insider, known as MattatDell on Twitter, has been reporting on the Streak saga for quite some time, and is as credible a source as any. Just a few hours ago, MattatDell explained not to expect the Streak to launch this week:

What other details? The Streak will not be compatible on T-Mobile, according to the Direct2Dell blog. Oh, and pre-orders for the Streak have begun again, after a short hiatus. If you pre-order by July 28th, you get a specially discounted Plantronics Bluetooth Headset for $0.99. The only question remains is to the release date. Pre-order by clicking the graphic below:

Check out a video of Kevin Andrew from the Dell Streak development team. Here's a quick description.
Kevin discusses these things in a bit more detail. On a side note, we did not realize that the close up shot of the Dell Streak running eclair did not show up clearly until after we had finished. I asked Kevin to take a picture of it. That picture is underneath the video.

And what about the Streak's smaller sibling, the Aero? The Aero will be launching August 9th, for $99 on-contract, and $299 without. Details and spec sheet on the Aero can be found here.

So, who's excited to snag a Dell Streak? And if not, why? It's certainly been a long time coming, and we hope Dell can resolve the launch date sometime soon.

Awww. That's gonna kill the sales. Most people will be turned away by the price.
