Honeycomb To Be Android 2.4, Not 3.0?

Honeycomb has been reported to be 3.0 since originally heard of, but a new rumor/report from sites like Pocketnow and Androidpolice says 2.4 might be the right number. These reports are more accurately known as site logs, and both sites have pointed out that they have received visits from devices identifying themselves as Android 2.4 based devices. While the number of devices with this log is still very low, thatís actually a good sign because as far as I know, none of us here have a honeycomb based device just yet. Itís also known that faking your deviceís identification is fairly easy, but who would really go through all that just to throw us off.

Regardless, what do you guys think of this? Do you mind the number change or, like me, you donít really care since itís the same software. How do you think Google judges these numbers? How did they go from 1.6-2.0 but have been using 2.X for such a long time. Give us what you think in a reply below.

It wouldn't be unheard of. Gingerbread was initially thought to be Android 3.0 but was then announced to be 2.3. This could happen with Honeycomb also. I don't really think it really matters.

I agree. Honeycomb is rumored to be only for tablets initially, then 3.0 will unify tablets and phones under a different build code. So 2.4 for Honeycomb would make sense to me. Probably Icecream or another sweet treat will be the next generation.

Gee, I read that 2.4 would also be called Gingerbread, just like 2.0 and 2.1 are Eclair. 2.4 would allow Honeycomb dual
processor apps to run on a single core phone. Some speculate that is why they've "delayed" the 2.3 release for phones
    other then the Nexus S.

As above said, I heard that 2.4 would have the same name as 2.3, Gingerbread. But, Honeycomb is supposed to be for tablets, and 2.4 is designed for the dual core phones to make use of the dual core when not being a tablet(does that make sense?). So basically it's like a smart phone version of Honeycomb, and therefore it could still be called Honeycomb.

I'm not sure what is going on. Motorola is calling Honeycomb 3.0 when talking about the Xoom tablet.

The new Android SDK references Honeycomb as 3.0, so I guess it's official. 2.4 came out of left field though... From Viewsonic of all companies. I'm not too sure about that one.
